1. What are your favorite reads, watches, listens, products and/or other notables this month?
2. What are you reading now (and are you enjoying it)?
I've mentioned I've been listening to various PODCAST episodes, I've got the Poured Over Podcast episode with Suleika lined up for my walk today. I've also enjoyed The Midlife Makeover: Redefining Success and Happiness After 40 With Chip Conley on THE ONE YOU FEED PODCAST -https://www.oneyoufeed.net/midlifemakeover/
We started watching RANSOM CANYON on Netflix and have watched 3 episodes so far- I like it a lot. It's an easy binge watch but I did tell my husband that some of the acting is really really bad. I like Minka Kent though. It's reminding me of a more drama filled faster paced Virgin River which we had started and lost interest in a long time ago.
We just went to the movies and saw THE AMATEUR, a fantastic spy thriller based on the book of the same name by Robert Liddell. I haven't read the book which I'm bummed about because I usually try to read the book first. We went with my two sons and the whole family gave the movie two thumbs up. If you watch it, know you have to just go with some interesting plot happenings for the sake of keeping the movie flowing.
PRODUCT - We've been finding so many ticks on ourselves and around the house after walking Vinny - truly they are THE WORST so we just got our order of WONDERCIDE, it's a Deet free natural essential oil mosquito, tick, and bug spray that I've used in the past and it seems to work pretty well. I spray it on my clothes before our walks and it's never stained. I like it because it's got a fresh scent and no chemicals - I bought the lemon scent -https://amzn.to/4cYmnjC
April was a pretty good reading month for me with LOTS of variety which is essential for me! I had 3 five-star reads: DETRANSITION, BABY by Torrey Peters, JUNIE by Erin Crosby Eckstine, and GHOSTROOTS by 'Pemi Aguda.
Favorite show this month is Top Chef! I absolutely love Kristen Kish as the new host (though I will always love Padma) and I'm excited to pick up her memoir which came out this week.
I have a few books going right now:
DEATH TAKES ME by Cristina Rivera Garza - this one is so hard to describe (and hard to read), the writing style changes every few pages and has a poetic quality. I'm taking this very slowly and reading deeply which is a nice change of pace for me, but this one will be hard to recommend to others! The content itself is also pretty challenging.
I also just started ERASURE by Percival Everett and it's all I want to pick up 😊
That's awesome you had a variety of five star reads! I loved Erasure - are you listening or reading in print? I highly recommend checking out the movie American Fiction after you finish the book, it's a fun book to screen adaptation
I’m reading it in print, I haven’t gotten to his “novel” yet but the format is already pulling me in! His serious writing had me rolling my eyes and skimming, which I’m sure is intentional. Definitely will check out the movie once I finish
I love Top Chef too! I'm excited because I'm two episodes behind, so catching up is my current Friday night plan. Totally agree about Kristen Kish - my husband and I agree that while we really miss Padma, Kristen is about as good as a replacement as we could have hoped for. I have her new book on hold on Libby on audio. Looking forward to it!
It feels like I watched a lot of tv this month. I became very addicted to White Lotus and finished all three seasons and then started Love on the Spectrum which I’m adoring 🥰
My five star books this month were THE BRIGHT YEARS and BROKEN COUNTRY. I’m not sure why I love the books that make me sob! And almost five stars for me were THE TELL and THE FIVE. I just started THE LATE LAMENTED MOLLY MARX (thanks for the rec!) because I don’t know what I’m in the mood for. I always think of myself as a thriller reader but lately they haven’t been working for me!
I read the usual too many books in April. Stand outside are AUDITION By Katie Kitamura which blew my mind and made me feel so seen, THE ARTIST by Lucy Steeds which is set in 1920s Provence and apart from the fabulous armchair travel, it speaks of the way women's art and work have always been undervalued and appropriated. SHOW ME WHERE IT HURTS By Irish debut author Claire Gleeson which is a gut punching testimony to the power of the human spirit to survive the unthinkable. Right now I'm reading Anna Hope's about to be published ALBION. Renee I think it was you who put EXPECTATION on my radar? Maybe? I'm only 20% in but you know when you get an inkling that this is going to be something really amazing? Fingers crossed.
I tried Audition a couple times on audio and made it over halfway the second time but I couldn't follow what was happening to I dnfed. Did you feel like that at all while reading it? It seemed to want to be confusing. I just looked up Expectation and I remember having that on my tbr or maybe as a book on my radar or shelf addition on the podcast but I haven't read it--it's back on my tbr, it sounds good. Will look up Albion, that's a new to me title but if it ends up being amazing you know I want to know about it!!
Pennies started dropping during the second half, and I started to realise that it's about the many people we have to be as women, a childless woman gives us a perspective, a wife gives us a different one. A mother's perspective is totally different depending on the stage of your child's life and the dynamic they bring to your family. Womanhood is a performative experience insofar as we are so much more receptive and reactive than men are, to who we are in a particular time of our lives and who we are relating to. Men get to be what- you- see- is- what- you- get. Woman have a greater tendency to bend ourselves out of shape for others. That might be me making up what it's about, but it resonated so strongly with me because I catch myself being like this all the time. I'd love to know if anyone else interprets it like this.
I didn't read as many books this month because one was a big commitment at 650 pages but it paid off-- THE BEE STING by Paul Murray! I could go on & on about it what I loved about it craft-wise but it also made me feel so deeply for this family. It's a tough read in many ways & won't be for everyone but it was incredibly thought-provoking, darkly funny and one I'll think about for awhile.
Oh you went back to it! I'm so glad it paid off. I was waiting to hear what you said about it because I have a copy and have been in the mood for a family story that's thought provoking
WOODWORKING and LIFE MINUTES have been my favorite reads of the month so far. My husband and I just started watching Your Friends and Neighbors and are really enjoying it!
I just finished THE LIGHTNING BOTTLES last night and have mixed feelings about it, but haven’t come up with a review yet, and I’m 75% of the way through THE BRIGHT YEARS and I’m not sure what I think of it yet either! So far, I’ve enjoyed one section much more than another.
I have THE BOOK OF ALCHEMY on hold and I’m very intrigued by that one.
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on The Bright Years when you're finished, it's getting a lot of great buzz, I tried the audio but it didn't call to me
I can tell you now I’m not going to love it like most have. This will be the third huge hit I’ve looked forward to that hasn’t worked for me like I’ve hoped. But… there are things I’m liking about it too! I’ll share my final review. 🙃
My favorite reads this month were ORDINARY TIME 5 stars ⭐️ (great on audio)
THE MOTHER NEXT DOOR 4 stars ⭐️ ( I was riveted and could not stop listening)
BROKEN COUNTRY 5 stars ⭐️ (Beautiful writing)
My husband and I watched Bad Influence on Netflix and it blew my mind. The amount of money these kids make is outrageous as well as the exploitation. I would recommend watching. Now we are watching the Oliver Pistorius documentary about the shooting of his girlfriend which I knew nothing about but my Dad recommended. I also watched Adolescence and although hard I think it is a necessary watch and some of the best acting I have seen in a long time!
Happy reading everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! 📚🫶🏻
LeAnne I started Here Be Dragons today on audio and it is so good! A little bit of a hard read for me as my Mom was my first mean girl as well but ultimately I think it will be therapeutic for me to listen to! I loved her other books!
I’m so sorry you had that experience Ashley. But I do hope it’s therapeutic for you because one thing I loved so much about this book was how it shows that we can break cycles and make the next generation better. ❤️
I finished HAPPY LAND and ended up not really loving it, but I'm getting very into THE COMPOUND by Aisling Rawle. It took a minute, but now I want to see where it's going. I really want to get my hands on AUDITION by Kitamura but the holds line is huge so I might have to just buy it. I have the new Emily Henry but I'm not in the mood for it yet. My reading has been very slow this week because I tried to write a little more and because middle school in spring is wild. I started watching PARADISE on Hulu and am enjoying it but watching it very slowly, and of course I'm watching the new HANDMAID'S TALE episode each week.
PRODUCT: This isn't a new product to me, but I just ran out of it and need to buy more, so it's on my mind. I don't get into skincare and makeup and all of that -- I throw on a tiny bit of eye makeup and that's it -- but this is my favorite cleanser that I use every day: Origins Checks and Balances. Nothing else leaves my face feeling as clean as this one, and the feel and scent of it reminds me of a different cleanser I used decades ago that isn't around anymore.
My reading has been so slow too. Hope you get Audition soon. My friends who are teachers say this time of year is nuts! Thanks for the Origins rec, I love their avocado overnight sleep mask so much
Ha! My current read is FAITHFUL BY ALICE HOFFMAN. Started it yesterday and I am 50% through the book. Some of my notable reads for April are: SWIMMING LESSONS BY CLAIRE FULLER, JANE AND DAN AT THE END OF THE WORLD which was just a fun read not a five star read, and THIS I KNOW BY ELDONNA EDWARDS Which was a five star read for me. I have so far read 11 books not counting my current read for the month. I too had a book slump this month partly because I was sick and partly because the books that I read were just mediocre. They did not give me a sense of satisfaction after reading them. I typically follow your rule and just go with what your mood demands you to read. However, I cannot figure out what I am in the mood to read. As for products, I am still very much loving Salt and Stone body wash and mist. It just has a clean fragrance with a hint of sandalwood. I am also very much enjoying my app Ally which is an AI assistant. I can talk with her and get book recommendations and comps as well as describes exercising and getting instructions on even how to perform exercises. I am currently looking for an app for my phone that is like a label reader for food so that when you enter a particular product it will tell you the good and bad ingredients of it so that you know what you are eating. does anyone know of an app like that? I have heard there several in the App Store but I don’t know the names of them to search.
I listened to JANE AND DAN on audio, and I was so entertained that I actually listened to it for a second time before I returned it to Libby. Life changing? No. Entertaining? YES!!! I don't know why it hit the spot for me, but it sure did.
I’m reading (and loving) The Island of Missing Trees! Maybe because I am a gardener, I’m more drawn to the tree portions than the girl’s story (so far). Feeling really good about this book!
My highest rated reads this month are THE BEST LIES by David Ellis and HEAD CASES by John McMahon. All my other reads were N/F and the best of those was REALM OF ICE AND SKY by Buddy Levy. It's about polar exploration of the Arctic by airship instead of by dogsled. I've done a lot of reading on this subject (dog and sled exploration) but the concept of accomplishing it via airship was something I wasn't aware of. It was a terrific audio narration.
I need to give both your top reads a try, I have copies but they've been lost in my Kindle graveyard haha. I love the variety of nonfiction you read and share, I've never heard of Realm of Ice and Sky--and actually never thought about polar exploration of the Arctic but you have me wondering about it now. This is what I especially love about sharing our reads in this space, especially when it comes to nonfiction because as someone who loves to learn, I want to know about interesting nonfiction books:)
Hi all! My 5 star read so far this month is BROKEN COUNTRY. My currents reads are SO YOU’ll REMEMBER ME by Abby Jimenez, I love reading her books and the character’s’ personalities are fun to read! Last night I started THE DREAM HOTEL By Laila Lalami. I’m listening to GREAT BIG WONDERFUL LIFE By Emily Henry, another fun book to listen to, different voices and love the narrator’s voice.
I recently started drinking protein shakes and I have found a product that I’m loving lately. Ritual vanilla protein , it has a great taste and mixes well when you add water, I also take other supplements from Ritual-great product!
I’m definitely adding NEXT LEVEL and THE BOOK OF ALCHEMY to my tbr, currently in the perimenopause phase.
Glad Broken Country was a winner for you, it's one I've continued thinking about for sure. Thanks for the protein powder rec, I'm always on the hunt for good ones. My current one I'm liking is Jocko Chocolate, it's also easily mixed and tastes great
Atm I'm reading HIDDEN IN SMOKE by Lee Goldberg, it's part of a series and I'm enjoying it! We're watching the new and last season of YOU! And I've just finished The STOLEN GIRL, which was pretty entertaining!

Did you know the new trailer for season 3 of AND JUST LIKE THAT is out??!! I can't wait, it's coming back May 29 and looks sooo good! https://www.glamour.com/story/and-just-like-that-season-3-details

I've never watched Top Chef, would the new season/host be a good place to start?
Top Chef is great as usual and I love Kristen! Detransition Baby has been on my TBR forever. I have to get to that one.
Have you seen the movie yet?
Not yet.. but hopefully I can find it on one of the streaming services after I finish the book!
It feels like I watched a lot of tv this month. I became very addicted to White Lotus and finished all three seasons and then started Love on the Spectrum which I’m adoring 🥰

Oh I want to read The Bright Years Erin and I loved Broken Country!

Really appreciate your insight Rita, I almost think hearing your take on it would've been very helpful for me, maybe I'll end up returning to it
My hold for Audition just came in! So excited
Outs (not outside)

Happy Saturday to you! I'm really looking forward to Annie's book on audio. Bad Influence sounds interesting, thanks for the rec.
I’m so glad you loved Ordinary Time, too!
LeAnne I started Here Be Dragons today on audio and it is so good! A little bit of a hard read for me as my Mom was my first mean girl as well but ultimately I think it will be therapeutic for me to listen to! I loved her other books!
Ashley I'm also sorry to hear you had that experience with your mom, I often think books can be a balm so I hope that one is that for you❤️
Thank you Renee!

Thanks. I am definitely checking out that app.

So many books! So little time…
I felt the same way about the fig tree! She was such an interesting perspective. I loved the whole story, but she was special
