I’m definitely a mood reader, which can get complicated when I’m feeling kinda cranky. I just read Laura Dave’s new book, The Night We Lost Him, and I loved it! 😊 My current ‘slow read’ is Ordinary Mysticism by Mirabai Starr. It’s deep, beautiful and so good for the space I’m in. I never used to DNF anything but you and Tina helped me with that ridiculous way of thinking and now I have no problem saying, “No thanks.” Thanks for continuing to write and offer input. 🥰

You said it about mood reading- our mood's can cause us problems when trying to pick books sometimes. I'm so glad Tina and I could help light that DNF pathway for you:) And the absolute best part of setting a book aside is it doesn't have to be forever, it will be waiting for you if and when you decide to give it another try

Mood reader,, dnf or occasionally skip to last 2 chapters to see how it ends works for me

I’m very much a mood reader and give a book 100 pages before I DNF. I’m a senior, and if a book doesn’t grab me, I move on…so many books, so little time.

This is so true, there's not enough time to read all the books! And those that we dnf will still be there if we change our mind:)

Thanks for the movie recommendation! Definitely going to check out Ghostlight. Speaking of good viewing, I just binged Nobody Wants This on Netflix and it was so good! The chemistry between the leads is off the charts and it genuinely is funny. I'm hoping for a season two 🤞

It's a different kind of movie but one that I keep thinking about, I hope you like it. So my husband and I binged 5 episodes of Nobody Wants This last night- it's so good! I love Kristin Bell, she's so funny and as you said the chemistry between her and Adam Brody is perfection. I'm sure we'll finish it tonight- those short episodes are easily bingeable!

So bingeable! I was sick this weekend but since my husband graciously took the kids out of the house, I was able to watch the whole show which never happens for me! So fun.

An all day binge is the best, I did that on Saturday with the recent episodes of Emily in Paris and it was so fun. Hope you’re feeling better!

I definitely DNF— quickly— if it doesn’t catch my attention and match my mood. 😏

Thanks for the “Ghostlight” movie recommendation! Can’t wait to watch.

My thoughts on reading have turned to star ratings. I keep a running list of 5 star reads throughout the year to make it easier at the end of the year to compile my top ten for the year. I noticed that three on my list this year are from series. It just so happened that three of my favorite series had books release this year. They are ORPHAN X THURSDAY MURDER CLUB AND DANIEL HAWTHORNE. I am questioning whether I have a right to rate those books in a series 5 stars. I thought that the books were the best book in the series series so far. But the rating will only mean something to someone who is reading the same series. let’s face it, ORPHAN X is not literary fiction. this has led me to overthink the whole process. it has me questioning whether or not mysteries and suspense or thrillers can be five star books or must a book be a literary fiction book with a mystery or suspense element to the story..

I have a lot of thoughts about star ratings- maybe I'll write a longer post on them- but I'll give you my shortened two cents to what you said you struggle with. I think star ratings are so subjective but at their most basic they express to others and to yourselves how much we liked a book. I tend to think of 5 stars as "I really really loved this book" not that it's a perfect book, just that it's a top level loved this book book. And I think mysteries and thrillers deserve to get 5 stars just as much as literary fiction. I think any book in any genre is worthy of 5 stars if it's a book we think deserves it. I tend to lean toward the end of the star spectrum in my belief that star ratings are most helpful to the reader giving them. Star ratings allow me to look at books I read years ago and immediately know what I thought of it at the time I finished it. As someone who's read a ton of mysteries and thrillers (and series), I've given 5 stars to quite a lot in that genre. I say don't over think it, go with your reading intuition. And even though the Orphan X series isn't literary fiction, I personally think his writing is some of the best out there - he's made us so invested in a character that we will follow Evan Smoak wherever he goes right?!!

Thank you. Makes sense to me. I will go with it. You would think I was choosing books for Pulitzer prize when I rate A book.

Haha maybe it’s our Aquarian nature- I take my star ratings seriously too, more so since I’ve embraced quarter stars which feels so nit picky but I can’t help using them now that I’ve started

I feel you haha because that is how i am with half star ratings. I know better than to go there with quarter stars. I could read a book In the time that it would take me to decide how many quarter starsin the time that it would take me to decide how many quarter stars. 😀.

I would tell you I’m not a mood reader but that mite not b true. I usually come up with a list of books that I will need to read for my different book clubs plus other books that I’d like to have read for a special occasion. For example, I am going to Texas Book Festival and want to have a few books read before I go because I plan on seeing the authors…The Real Americans, The Long, Strange, Eventful History, and Beautyland. I’m currently listening to the Darren Stevens’ series cause Attica Locke will b there as well. But sometimes, I’ll end up reading something else just cause and generally audio books are all over the place!

I DNF books much more easily than I used to and I really try to listen to myself about a book…if I think it won’t b for me, I may read it but actively try and avoid getting sucked into FOMO. For example, am sure that the new Sally Rooney will not b for me…her previous books were not but the hype machine is on overdrive! I really have decreased my DNFs because I am listening to myself and not starting something just cause it is the IT book!

I think we're alike in letting our bookish intuition guide us more often than not! I've also been swayed by the Sally Rooney hype machine even though I didn't like Normal People at all and dnfed Conversations with Friends. The New Yorker reviewed Intermezzo and called it a "weeper" and once I saw that I thought oh maybe I do need to read it😅 I love a good cry but I know deep down her writing style isn't really for me. What are your thoughts on the Attica Locke series?
